"…I hope to produce Kings and Queens who will never wear crowns but shall be royals just the same."

  • Don Vicente R. Gullas, "The Art of Living Well"

The Gullas College of Medicine (GCM) was founded in 1977 by the Gullas family in Banilad, Mandaue City. The college was established to respond to the call for more physicians to serve the medical and health needs of the country. The Gullas family also wanted to give students from Visayas and Mindanao better opportunities for excellent medical education near their localities.

The University of the Visayas was founded by Don Vicente Gullas and his wife, Lady Josefina R. Gullas, in 1919. The University of the Visayas has produced distinguished alumni in government service, public administration, and the professions of law, engineering and architecture, pharmacy, medicine, nursing, accountancy, business, liberal arts, education, criminology, maritime and nautical, computer studies, as well as in sports and the arts. GCM proudly adheres to the Gullas legacy as part of the University of the Visayas educational system.

GCM continues to honor the memory of its founder Don Vicente Gullas, a lawyer, writer, and educator. The college has a proud history of producing topnotchers in the medical board examinations and outstanding medical practitioners serving in both government and private sectors. We are proud to have produced 43 (forty-three) batches of doctors, with a healthy 3,000++ alums – our beloved heritage and contribution to medicine.

The college has been led by a series of dedicated deans, starting with Dr. Renato Espinosa, a UP graduate and a former President of the Philippine Medical Association (PMA), who served for 18 years. He was succeeded by Dr. Pek Eng Lim, Dr. Samuel D. Trocio, Sr., Dr. Leonard Raymund C. Cimafranca, Dr. Ray Perez, Dr. Leopold G. Lucero, and Dr. Niño Ismael S. Pastor. The current dean, Dr. Jose Juan Rafael G. Laico, a renowned neurologist, continues to uphold the college’s commitment to excellence.

GCM is a melting pot of cultures, welcoming students from various countries such as Nepal, Taiwan, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Iran, and the United States. This diversity enriches the learning experience and fosters a global perspective among its students.

The Gullas College of Medicine is a legacy of excellence and a beacon of hope for the future of medicine. The college is committed to providing its students with the highest quality education and training, so that they can become compassionate and competent physicians who will serve the people of the world.

Visayan Heritage

The establishment of the College was driven by a profound sense of morality, spirituality, and religious principles rooted in the values of the Judeo-Christian tradition, which were inspired by the visionary ideals of Don Vicente Gullas, the founder of the University of the Visayas. GCM is deeply committed to educating both men and women, equipping them to provide medical and public health services that bring honor and glory to God. Initially, the focus was on the well-being of the Filipino people, with a particular emphasis on the advancement of Central Visayas, including the province and cities of Cebu. However, in recent years, this dedication has expanded to encompass communities worldwide.

Philosophy

The core principles of the GCM are deeply rooted in the guiding gospel of "The Art of Living Well" by Don Vicente R. Gullas:

“With God’s inspiration as my guiding light, someday among thousands of VI (Visayanian Institute) and University of the Visayas students and alumni, I hope to produce Kings and Queens who will never wear crowns but shall be royals just the same; And when I shall be dead, I wish that my life will not be a tale that is told -  a dream empty and forgotten, I wish it to be a prayer, or a song of love and usefulness, even if only to kindle the heart of fire in the soul of some weakling or some unfortunate being who have still the spark and image of God in them.”

GCM's philosophy is firmly anchored in the values of "Amor, Servitium, Leadership et Humanitas" (Love, Service, Leadership, and Humanity). It places these principles above all else, recognizing their significance in shaping the education and future careers of its students. GCM aims to foster a broad perspective that prepares students for their chosen medical path, empowering them to serve the needs of the people in their communities.
